    Compress Image to 20KB

Hit the 20KB cap that passport, visa and ID portals enforce — your file never leaves this browser tab.

Most passport and visa portals reject photos above 20KB, and they reject them at the last step, after you have already filled in the form. The cap is small because these systems were built when bandwidth was expensive and they still run on the same limits today.

ImgPress resizes and re-encodes your photo entirely inside the browser. Nothing is uploaded, so your passport scan never touches a server. Drop the file, and the tool searches for the highest quality that still lands under 20KB.

    How it works

    1. Drop your image. Drag a JPG, PNG or WebP onto the drop zone, or click to choose a file.
    2. Keep the target. The page is pre-set to the size you need; change it if the portal asks for something else.
    3. Download and upload. The tool shows the new size next to the original. Download the file and upload it to the portal.

    Why the 20KB limit exists

The number comes from passport and visa uploads. Upload forms set a hard ceiling to keep their storage and bandwidth predictable, and once a limit is written into a form it tends to survive for years. Knowing that, the useful move is not to fight the limit but to hit it while keeping the image readable — which is exactly what a target-size encoder does.

    Questions

Why do passport portals cap photos at 20KB?

Legacy government upload systems were designed for slow connections. A 20KB JPEG at around 600x600 pixels is still readable for identity checks, so the limit stayed.

Will compressing to 20KB ruin my photo?

For a passport-style headshot, no. ImgPress first keeps the pixel dimensions you need and lowers JPEG quality gradually, only downscaling if quality alone cannot reach 20KB.

    Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. All processing happens with the Canvas API in your browser. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the tool still works.

    What formats can I use?

JPG, PNG and WebP go in; JPG or WebP comes out. PNG with transparency is flattened onto white, which is what ID portals expect.
